Mark Willenbrink is back with ArtistsNetwork.tv to show you how to paint with oils, even if you’ve never picked up a brush. He starts with a review of materials (he uses water-soluble oils), then demonstrates basic techniques for holding a brush, making different kinds of strokes, how to work with a palette and more. From here he takes you step by step through two complete paintings, a still life with pears which shows not only how to paint the pears, but how to setup a still life, and a landscape scene painted from a photograph. Familiar subjects, simple compositions and a realistic style will give you the confidence and skills you need to create finished oil paintings. Practice mixing greens in this preview, to paint pears in light and shadow.

I’ve often watched movies like that wondering what it would be like to own an original piece of art, painted by hand from one of the masters of our time. I can’t help but look at the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper and wonder how they would look in my Dining Room, but the truth is that most of the great works of art are locked inside of a gallery or museum and will only be seen under lamp in large crowds of people.
