Saturday piano lessons were the reason Alan Patrick first started painting. I took piano lessons on Saturday mornings across the hall from Roland Osbourne of the Richmond Group of artists. His studio was big; full of north light, stacks of canvases and the smell of turpentine. I told my mom that was where I wanted to be, Alan says. We compromised. I took both lessons, which is good because I still play the piano. Although Alan began painting as a young child, it wasnt until he was old enough to collect social security that he began to paint full-time. Alans first career was as a professional potter, a craft that helped support his family. While Alans work is considered part of the realist tradition, he also regards himself as a formalist. In addition to transferring the actual appearance of his subject matter onto the canvas, Alans paintings are studies of composition, form, line, texture and color. His finished work looks very traditional, but Alan incorporates a variety of perspectives into the finished piece. I look at something and see the shadows, Alan explains, but on the canvas you can move them so the shadow looks better. He says his country upbringing influences his choice of landscapes, rural scenes and still life as subject matter. He recently completed a project to raise funds for the Nature Conservancy that gave him the freedom to go out on hikes and develop a suite of images from natural Indiana habitats.
